08/04/2007 - Chicago, IL (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Jacque Jones collected three hits and knocked in a run as the Chicago Cubs used a six-run third inning to down the New York Mets, 6-2, in the second contest of a three-game series at Wrigley Field.
Ted Lilly pitched 7 2/3 strong innings, allowing two runs on seven hits for the Cubs, who ended a two-game slide. Lilly (12-5), who has won seven of his last eight starts, also struck out eight while walking one.
Mark DeRosa knocked in two runs in the victory for the Cubs, who currently trail Milwaukee by a half-game in the NL Central. The Brewers play the Phillies later on Saturday night.
New York starter John Maine, who came into the game with wins in his last two starts, was roughed up for six runs on four hits in just 2 2/3 innings. Maine (12-6) also walked three, hit a batter and struck out one.
Moises Alou hit two home runs for the NL East-leading Mets, who had a three- game winning streak end.
After two scoreless frames, the Cubs scored six runs in the third to take control. Jones doubled to start things and moved to second as Jason Kendall walked. Lilly then grounded into a fielder's choice as Jones was thrown out at third. Alfonso Soriano followed with a groundout to the pitcher, moving the runners to second and third. Ryan Theriot then came up and legged out an infield single to plate Kendall and get Chicago on the board.
Maine then struggled with his control and issued back-to-back walks to Derrek Lee and Aramis Ramirez to force a run home. Another run was forced in after Maine hit Cliff Floyd in the leg. DeRosa kept the inning going with a single to left that brought in Lee and Ramirez. In his second at-bat of the inning, Jones laced a base hit to score Floyd and end Maine's day early as Aaron Sele came in from the bullpen.
The Mets got a run back in the fourth as Alou homered to left, and in the sixth he went deep again to make it 6-2.
New York put two runners on base with two outs in the eighth, but Carlos Marmol struck out Damion Easley to end the threat.
