01/28/2007 - Pittsburgh, PA (Sportsbook Betting Lines) - Aaron Gray scored 13 points and pulled down 10 rebounds, and the ninth-ranked Pittsburgh Panthers ripped the St. John's Red Storm, 72-46.

Sam Young scored 11 points for Pitt (19-3, 7-1 Big East), which won its second straight and ninth in ten games. Mike Cook added eight points for the Panthers.

Anthony Mason scored 10 points and raked in six rebounds for St. John's (12-9, 3-5), which had won two straight entering the game, including a 71-68 upset of No. 22 Notre Dame on Tuesday. Eugene Lawrence scored nine points and pulled down six boards for the Red Storm, which struggled mightily against Pitt on the offensive end. St. John's shot a dreadful 32 percent from the field, and only made 4-of-24 from behind the three-point line.

Pitt opened the second half with seven straight points, and the Red Storm, who had stayed within striking distance for much of the first half, could not get back into the game after that. A Levance Fields layup closed the stretch, putting the Panthers up 40-23.

The 17-point advantage held until another Pitt run officially put the nail on St. John's coffin. Ronald Ramon and Tyrell Biggs drilled threes on a 16-4 run which pushed the Pitt lead to 28 points, at 59-31, with just under eight minutes left

St. John's hung tight in the first half, but Pitt was able to pull away late. A trey from Lawrence brought the Red Storm to within 15-10 with 11:11 left in the first half, but the Panthers responded with a 13-4 run, and a Sam Young jumper pushed Pitt out to a 28-14 advantage with 5:06 left.

St. John's trailed 33-23 at the intermission.

Pittsburgh earned their passage to the big game by beating their division rival, the Baltimore Ravens, 23-14 in yesterday's AFC Championship Game. The Steelers jumped on Baltimore early, building a 13-0 first half lead, and never let up on their way to a fairly easy win. Although the Ravens did close to within two points in the fourth quarter, it never appeared as if they had enough offense to pull off the upset.

The Steelers dominating defense held Baltimore to a total of 198 yards while allowing them to convert just three third downs in 13 attempts. Pittsburgh also forced quarterback Joe Flacco into three interceptions, one of which safety Troy Polamalu returned fourty yards for a touchdown.

The Cardinals, by far the playoff team with the longest odds to reach Super Bowl XLIII, did so yesterday with a 32-25 upset of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship. Arizona charged out of the gates and built a 24-6 halftime lead that had the Eagles venerable defense reeling. Quarterback Kurt Warner and wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald did most of the damage, connecting on three first half touchdowns.

Arizona, however, could not sustain their momentum and the Eagles took a 25-24 with 10:45 left to play in the fourth. The Cardinals, with the franchise's first Super Bowl appearance hanging in the balance, mounted a fourteen play, 72 yard touchdown drive that consumed 7:52 off the clock. Warner hit running back Tim Hightower on a short screen for the go-ahead, game clinching score that will forever live in Cardinal infamy.
